dr hab. inż. Andrzej Romanowski

I am a co-founder of the digital forensics team (2006) and a co-founder of the Ubicomp research group, established in 2010 at Lodz University of Technology to develop research in Human–Computer Interaction. My research interests include applied computer science, cyber-physical systems, digital forensics, cybersecurity, sensor systems and human interaction with intelligent systems. I investigate new interaction methods in the context of Industry X.0, automation, robotisation and the use of artificial intelligence in industrial, workplace, office and medical environments. An important strand of my research also concerns technologies that support the security, resilience and predictable operation of technical and socio-technical systems.

In the area of SecurityTech, I focus in particular on methods for the acquisition, securing, processing and analysis of digital data; digital forensics tools; OSINT; and the analysis of digital traces, data from instant messengers, social networks, P2P systems and vehicle onboard computers. I also work on the use of AI systems for industrial optimisation and decarbonisation, as well as on sensor and tomographic systems, including industrial solutions and technologies for the detection of hazardous materials. In parallel, I develop research in HCI, AR/VR, eye-tracking, smart environments, future of work, and technologies supporting users’ health, well-being and safety.

I am the author or co-author of over 200 scientific publications, including papers in JCR-indexed journals, book chapters, articles in international and national journals, and papers published in congress and conference proceedings. I am also a co-editor of monographs and a co-author of intellectual-property-protected solutions, including a European patent on bimodal tomography and a patent application in the field of intelligent tomographic sensors. Between 2003 and 2026, I participated in research projects funded, among others, by the International Atomic Energy Agency, the EU, the UK EPSRC, the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education, NCN, NCBR and the Internal Security Fund, including as project leader and principal investigator.

Many projects in which I participated or which I supported scientifically received awards at international innovation competitions and invention exhibitions, including Grand Prix awards, medals and special prizes. My doctoral students, thesis students and students have won awards at international innovation forums, invention exhibitions and computer science competitions.
